Church of Nuestra Señora de la Calle - La Compañía

Renaissance parish in which the patron saint of the city is venerated

Popularly known by the nickname of "The Company", it was declared a National Monument in 1982. With a sober appearance and a Renaissance style, its aesthetics followed the patterns that define the beautiful Chiesa del Sacro Nome di Gesù, the mother church of the Company of Jesus in Rome. After its construction in 1584 it was under the dedication of San Lorenzo, although after the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767 it was transformed into a parish-sanctuary. When in 1871 the Order returned to Palencia, it declined to take possession of its old church and chose to run the parish of the exclaustrated Convent of San Francisco. Among the attractions that it shelters inside, a magnificent Main Altarpiece stands out, made in the mid-eighteenth century by Pedro de Bahamonde and in which the images of Saint Lawrence and those of other saints of the Order, such as Saint Francis Xavier and Saint Ignacio de Loyola. Currently, it houses the Virgen de la Calle, patron saint of the city whose festivity is celebrated every February 2.
