The Christ of the Otero
An emblematic sculpture of Jesus Christ 21 meters high which is the undisputed symbol of the city.
It is, without a doubt, one of the icons most loved by people of Palencia , visible from many points in the city.
It weighs 392 tons and was built in just 8 months. The first stone was laid on June 15, 1930 and the work was completed in February 1931. As a curiosity, that same year the Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro was inaugurated.
Its 21 meters make it the tallest Christ in Spain and one of the tallest in the world, it bears the signature of the brilliant sculptor from Palencia Victorio Macho (1886-1966), who after recognizing his most important work in it, was buried in the crypt of the hermitage of Santa María del Otero, excavated at the foot of the carving.
It has some of the most international cultural influences of the time such as Art Deco or Cubism. Do not miss the views of the city from its viewpoint! You can also visit the sanctuary and the Victorio Macho interpretation center dedicated to his artistic projects.
